A useful tree that will bring you luck if you look after it, hawthorn is beloved of the fairies...

Beautiful in the spring and common in the hedgerows hawthorn will become a tree of up to 10 m if left alone or can be trimmed to size.

The flowers are wonderful in May and the young leaves in the past were eaten in salads and sandwiches. The haws can be made into wine, or leave them for the birds and fairies.
